Garp has been placed on FINAL as of 9/10/2026.He must be pulled by 5:00 PM on 9/16/2026, or he will be humanely euthanized. Garp has been on Urgent Needs Rescue since 3/30/2026 and has demonstrated high Fear, Anxiety, and Stress (FAS) throughout his stay at the shelter. In his kennel, Garp displays significant signs of stress and arousal, including spinning in the kennel, jumping onto the kennel door, and constantly alarm barking. His consistently elevated FAS and kennel presentation suggest that the shelter environment is significantly impacting his emotional well-being.Despite his high FAS in the kennel, Garp has demonstrated loose body language and social behavior with people when outside of his kennel. He actively solicits attention by jumping up and leaning onto people. Garp is very active during play and enjoys leaping and jumping onto the play structures in the yard.Due to his high level of excitement and arousal during play, Garp has displayed a tendency to nip and jump at staff while out in the yard. This behavior has been redirectable thus far; however, it will require appropriate management, training, and supervision by an adopter or rescue organization to prevent the behavior from escalating.Garp has also displayed very social behavior with other dogs in the shelter. He has played very well with other dogs during interactions. Given Garp's high FAS, persistent kennel reactivity, high activity level, and tendency to nip and jump at handlers when highly excited, placement should be with an experienced adopter or rescue organization that can provide a lower-stress environment, appropriate decompression time, individualized behavioral support, and consistent training and management. His high arousal during play should be carefully considered when developing a handling and management plan.Garp is available for adoption or rescue. A rescue partner must commit to and pull Garp by 5:00 PM on 9/16/2026, or he will be humanely euthanized.EXTENSION REQUEST PROCESS Rescue Group (RG) may request an extension of an animal's Needs Rescue Final Date no later than 5:00 PM on the noted final date by emailing SJRescue@sanjoseca.gov, with a cc to a Division Manager or Shelter Operations Supervisor.05/27/26 08:59Garp is begging to be adopted or rescued from our shelter and grows more tired of this kennel life everyday. Garp is such an energetic and fun-loving dog that being in the kennel for most of the day is breaking him down; now while we do as much as we can to help him get his energy out, its nothing compared to consistent exercise he'd get when hes out of the shelter. PLEASE come in to give Garp the chance he deserves and help him turn into the best doggy version of himself that he can be!!09/03/26 14:47Garp had a fantastic morning at Hellyer County Park, enjoying a leisurely 3 mile adventure. He was a perfect gentleman throughout the outing, calmly passing dogs, joggers, walkers, and even wildlife without missing a beat. His favorite activity was hanging out in the grass with his new friends. As a special bonus, a professional photographer stopped to take photos that beautifully captured Garp's sweet, playful, and happy-go-lucky personality.What to know about Garp:• Calm car companion – A little shy when first getting into the car, but with gentle encouragement and a helping hand, Garp settles in comfortably and rides well.• Treat-motivated and eager to learn – This smart boy is happy to sit for treats and enjoys positive reinforcement, making him a fun companion to work with.• Affectionate with people – Garp adores human companionship and loves gentle pets, attention, and cuddles from his favorite people.• Easygoing walking buddy – Garp completed a leisurely 3 mile walk with ease and was wonderful on leash, calmly taking in all the sights and sounds along the way.Three words to describe Garp:Sweet, Playful and Affectionate03/30/26Garp is in need of rescue URGENTLY due to growing high arousal and rowdy behavior when being handled by staff; He is currenty available for adoption or rescue. Garp is looking for a patient and loving adopter who is committed to training Garp to shift some of his rowdy behavior into more positive tenancies.05/12/26What I did today:I had never met my walker before but that didn't stop me from greeting them with maximum wiggles and enthusiasm – new friends are the best friends! I collected all the attention and scratches I could during our breaks and showed off my `sit` whenever treats were on the table. At the end of our walk I got a pup cup – delish!What to know about this dog:• Minimal pull on leash (though loves to weave)• Treat-motivated with a good `sit` – can be a little jumpy/mouthy but is still young and would blossom with some structure and training• An incredibly sweet and friendly boy who would thrive in a loving home that can offer routine, consistency, and plenty of affectionThree words to describe me:Wiggly, Friendly, Playful
