Special needs: [YELLOW]Background: Owner surrender on 5/14 due to housing. Owner noted that the dog is very playful. Sometimes startles with loud noises. May be afraid of being groomed and sometimes barks at strangers, depending on the stranger. Intake staff noted that dog as uncomfortable/anxious with most handling (clacks teeth together when stressed), very flinchy and avoidant. Needed two people to vaccinate. Yellow dot on intake. Handling evaluation on 5/15. Handlers second time meeting the dog. Handled earlier in the same day for dog-dog evaluation.O: Dog stood at the front of the kennel, soft wide wagging tail, relaxed open mouth. Small pieces of chewed kong on his kennel floor. Easy to leash. Pulled hard out of the ward, ignoring barking neighbors. Eliminated x1 immediately on entering the yard. Dropped leash. Dog approached handler for all over pets around his face. Allowed all over handling of head, neck, chest, legs, belly, tail with loose body language and soft face. Allowed teeth check. Dog is known to be approximately 1 year old. Responded to sit and down. Took treats with moderately hard mouth, opening mouth wide against handler's flat palm. Chased a tennis ball and returned, dropping it at handler's feet. Played three or four rounds of fetch, then walked away to sniff. Followed a tossed stuffed squeaky toy. Picked it up, shook it vigorously, then let go and walked away to sniff. Flinched slightly when handler touched dog's back while dog was sniffing. Pulled strongly back to kennel. No issues rekenneling.B A: Very affiliative and social young dog. Medium to high energy. Playful and treat motivated.B Knows basic commands, including sit and down. Needs work on loose-leash walking. Yellow for in-shelter handling d/t pulling on leash and slightly flinchy with some touch.B P: Make available for adoption. Recommend patient rewards-based approach to basic training (leash walking, basic commands) with structured and slow introduction to new environments/people. May do best in a home with no young children d/t his size and strength, but likely would be okay with dog-savvy older kids.B B [2026-05-15 19:57:00.000]

Well, hello! Leroy here.

I'm still young and full of beans, with a whole lot of love (and a few zoomies) saved up for the right person.

I'm on the bigger side — but honestly, that's just more of me to hug.

I do come with a few special needs, but please don't let that worry you — I just need a patient friend, and I pay it back tenfold.

I'd love to meet you. But if I'm not quite the one, maybe you could do me one tiny favor — print my bio and pop it up somewhere a future best friend might spot it. Who knows, I might see you at the park someday! Either way, thank you for stopping by and giving me a moment. It really did mean a lot. — Leroy 🐾

The rescue’s notes on Leroy

Leroy is a high-energy, social, 1.3-year old Belgian Shepherd Malinois / Cane Corso Mastiff mix, who is playful, people-friendly, and very dog-social in group settings. He weighs 70 pounds, enjoys interaction and tends to warm up quickly, showing a loose, happy demeanor once he has a chance to decompress. He is very active and thrives on play, especially with other well-matched dogs, where he enjoys chase-style games and rough-and-tumble play. With people, he can be affectionate and engaging, often checking in for pets and attention once settled. Leroy is still learning leash skills and basic structure, so he benefits from continued training, consistency, and outlets for his energy. He does best with active adopters who can provide exercise, enrichment, and ongoing socialization. Due to his size, strength, and working-breed mix, he will do best with breed-experienced adopters comfortable managing high-drive dogs and providing structured guidance. He would likely thrive in a home with another compatible dog or an active routine that meets his physical and mental needs.
