Hi there! Max here.

I'm still young and full of beans, with a whole lot of love (and a few zoomies) saved up for the right person.

I'd love to meet you. But if I'm not quite the one, maybe you could do me one tiny favor — print my bio and pop it up somewhere a future best friend might spot it. Who knows, I might see you at the park someday! Either way, thank you for stopping by and giving me a moment. It really did mean a lot. — Max 🐾

The rescue’s notes on Max

Location: Jay, ME Introducing Max! Handsome young redhead seeking VERY committed relationship Carrying some baggage but putting in the work on his trust issues Smart, playful and athletic Adorable nubby tail and freckles that slay Max is an Australian Cattle Dog mix who is estimated to be between 2-3 years old. His looks, pocket Heeler size, and light build suggest he could be part Jack Russell Terrier. But he was brought to the shelter as a stray, so we don't know his history or his parentage. What we do know is that Max's previous life taught him that people are not to be trusted. Max has been in his foster home for a month and has made great progress, steadily revealing his playful, clownish side. He loves toys, and is learning that playing with people is fun! Once this little Hermit Crab comes out of his shell, his play style is ALL Cattle Dog - extremely mouthy - so he'll need a breed savvy person that can redirect that behavior. He is a moderately energetic boy but settles quietly in his crate. Max seeks attention from his foster folks, and is learning the joys of ear skritches and belly rubs. He's come a long way, but he is still very skittish, and is more nervous around men than women. Max's brain is telling him that people are scary even as his heart desperately wants to love and be loved. His adopter's patience will be rewarded with a smart, funny companion who is ready to trust and form that unbreakable Cattle Dog bond. Max loves to be outside and is shaping up to be a great little trail buddy! At 30 lbs, he is super portable and easily lifted over rough scrambles. When we meet other hikers on the trail, Max is wary but not reactive. We have purposefully stuck to quieter trails while he gains confidence. Max's adopter will have to keep his comfort level in mind when planning experiences with Max, and celebrate the happy milestones as they come. Max really enjoys the company of other dogs, and would love a balanced, playful canine companion to show him the ropes and help him build trust. He would also do fine as an only dog. He has not been exposed to cats in his foster home. Max would not thrive in a busy, chaotic household. He needs calm, routine, and structure in an adult-only home. Max has come so far and so fast, we know that with more time and gentle socialization, he's going to be an amazing dog. We also know that Max's above-and-beyond potential is going to require an above-and-beyond adopter, so we're going to be very careful about rightness of fit. He's ready to show you he's worth it! Max is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines and preventatives. He is being fostered in Maine, and applicants should be willing to travel to adopt him.
